Due to the decreases in immunity that come with age, older adults are at a high risk of serious complications from Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). The virus initially presents as mild flu-like symptoms. The infection worsens and can develop into pneumonia, aggravate asthma or exacerbate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In an individual with a related underlying medical history, the condition can result in congestive heart failure.
AusTrials are currently trialing a newly-developed RSV vaccine. You may be eligible to receive this vaccine if:
you are 65-85 years of age
you are generally healthy
you do not have documented allergies to vaccines or to egg or egg products
any medical conditions and ongoing medications are stable
